Continuing Education Requirements for Dentists in Jamaica<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\n

The Dental Council of Jamaica has decided that, in order to meet international standards, dentists practising in Jamaica as of January 2015 will need to complete continuing education requirements in order to renew their practising certificates. After extensive worldwide research, it has been determined that dentists will need to complete\u00a040 hours\u00a0of continuing education credits over a\u00a0two-year\u00a0period.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of these 40 CEs the dentist would be able to obtain:<\/span><\/p>\n

- The majority of these credits from core dental lectures<\/span><\/p>\n

- 4 credits from internet-based continuing education programs (DCJ has a right to reject questionable programs)<\/span><\/p>\n

- 10 credits from approved local general medical programs put on by Jamaica Medical Doctors Association, Medical Association of Jamaica, Nurses Association of Jamaica, or other entity approved by the DCJ.<\/span><\/p>\n

- 2 mandatory continuing education credits are required from an infection control program<\/span><\/p>\n

- 4 mandatory continuing education credits are required from ethics\/professionalism lecture.<\/span><\/p>\n

- One (1)\u00a0 \u00a02\" x 2\" passport type photograph<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The final requirement over the two-year renewal period is that of obtaining a basic life support (BLS) license.<\/span><\/p>\n

Please note that NO CE credits are awarded for BLS, it is a separate requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the dental specialist, the DCJ strongly recommends that you obtain\u00a080%\u00a0of your credits from your area of speciality.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Exceptions<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

    \n
  1. \n

    Full-time lecturers\u00a0at the local dental institutions will not be required to have\u00a040 hours continuing education credits but will be required to obtain the requirements for infection control and ethics, as well as completing BLS.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    For\u00a0non-full time lecturers\u00a0and others that give lectures at accredited programs, 4 hours of continuing education credits would be awarded for each 1-hour of a lecture given. Each lecture presented may only be used once in each renewal period for claiming CE credits.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Authors who contribute to \u201cpeer reviewed\u201d scientific journals will receive 6 hours as primary author and 3 hours as the secondary author for each article published. The article may only be used to claim CE credits one time, even if re-published in a different journal.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Dentists actively enrolled in full-time post-graduate programs, and not practising dentistry, will not be required meet any of the requirements for CE credits or BLS.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Dentists actively enrolled in post-graduate programs, but still practising dentistry concurrently, will not be required to have 40 hours continuing education credits, but will be required to obtain the requirements for infection control and ethics, as well as completing BLS.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Who is an approved continuing education provider?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
    \n

    The Dental Council of Jamaica will be required to approve all local CE credit providers, as well as allocating the CE credits to the prospective programs.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The following are the expected providers for local CEs: JDA, JAPDENS, Kingston Study Club, UWI and UTECH dental programs, JMA, JMDA, NAJCE credits from accredited programs in the approved regions for reciprocity will also be accepted as continuing education for Jamaica, for example, ADACERP.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n

    What to do at the time of renewal?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
    \n

    At the time of renewal, the practising dentists will need to send to the DCJ copies of their continuing education credits as well as a basic life support certificate in order to be able to renew their license.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Introductory Period (March 2014- December 31st, 2014)<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
    \n

    The dental practitioner will be required to obtain an introductory 10 CE credits in any dentally related topic from an approved provider in the year 2014 in order to secure registration for 2015. Please note that ethics, infection control and BLS will not be required during the introductory period.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n

    Post-Introductory Period (January 2015 onwards)\u00a0The first two-year period for renewal will be from January 2015 to January 2017. During this period the\u00a0full 40 credits\u00a0mentioned above and BLS will be necessary for registration.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Dentists are encouraged to start the collection of their CE credits and records to make registration a smooth process.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
